First impressions of the Mark 02R3 — gen 4 foam core, Kevlar face, medium density feel. Controllable power and easy resets from a smaller brand.

I have a paddle here that a lot of people probably haven't heard of.

This is the Mark 02R3 — a gen 4 foam core paddle from Mark Pickleball. Mark is a smaller brand, but I've seen some positive reviews so far on this paddle.

Let's see how it stacks up to other gen 4 paddles.

Mark 02R3 paddle

Intro

My name is Pickle Li. I'm a 5.0 pickleball player and I've reviewed over 45 paddles on this channel. I created MyPickleList, which does community-driven paddle ratings, and there are currently over 850 ratings.

Caveats & Disclosures

Reminder: This is a first impressions review, not a full review.

I played with this for a few days, so I can't speak on long-term durability.

I'll be rating this paddle on my website MyPickleList at the end, so stay tuned for that.

If you do decide to get one, use code PICKLELI for 10% off. It's around $170 after the code, so it falls in the mid-tier priced paddles.

Shout out to Mark Pickleball for sending this over!

Quick Specs Overview

The Mark 02R3 is a gen 4 paddle.

The core has a bunch of circular holes which seem to be a popular setup nowadays.

It only comes in a 16mm elongated shape. Like always, I would have preferred a hybrid or widebody if it was an option, but I understand why brands make only elongated given how popular they are.

My paddle weighed 8.04 oz.

On-Court First Impressions

Pop

This paddle is on the poppier side — above average pop, but nothing crazy.

Enough to compete with the other high-tier power paddles and not get outmatched.

Occasionally had some stuff pop up more than I would expect, but for the most part controllable.

Control & Feel

It's kind of a mix between an original gen 4 with a soft dense feel and the newer poppy gen 4 paddles like the Boomstik and Inferno.

I would describe it as medium density — in between dense and hollow. Off the face it isn't too plush, but on resets it feels more plush than other poppy paddles.

So basically your mix of a hollow poppy gen 4 and the soft plush ones.

I liked this paddle a lot for resets, even for an elongated. The sweet spot was good and easy to reset with.

I played with this paddle in stock form the whole time and played well. It has some pop but easier to reset than the more powerful poppy paddles.

On easier stuff — specifically a reset right outside the kitchen — it popped up more than I expected, but probably something I can dial in with more time with it. But other than that, the feel was predictable and I could play well with it.

This paddle uses a Kevlar face, which hasn't been as popular as of recent but from what people generally say, it's about the same as carbon fiber faces. It felt a bit grittier than average, but I didn't notice anything too different in terms of spin.

Drives were solid, and I could get them to dip by taking off some pace.

My drops were decent and pretty consistent of going over, just sometimes a bit high if I wasn't focusing too much. Not the most aggressive in terms of dip on the shot, but helped me play a consistent game.

Everything else felt very good and no complaints anywhere else.

Power

Power is probably mid-tier. Maybe on the lower side.

No issues with putaways but it wasn't crazy power or anything. Controllable power, in my opinion, if that's what you're looking for.

Serves and returns were above average and drives were decent in pace.

Early Verdict

Now let me rate this on MyPickleList.

Back to the review.

The Mark 02R3 provides a nice middle ground in terms of gen 4 feel. A bit poppier than your more soft and plush gen 4's but a bit easier to control in terms of resets than your Infernos and paddles like that.

It has a good sweet spot for an elongated, and I could play well in stock form.

I would give the Mark 02R3 an 8/10.

I think it is a good paddle that fits in that controllable power category. It won't blow you away with the power or pop, but has enough firepower when you need it.

I think this paddle is for you if you want a gen 4 paddle with a bit more control than the high-tier power paddles. Has a bit of that softer control feel but has good pop to keep it relatively aggressive.

I think Mark made a good all-around power paddle. I wish there was a hybrid or widebody, but regardless, a paddle that you can play well with pretty easily without any customization.
