Volair's best paddle?

Hook / Context
The Volair Mach 2 Forza was named the best control paddle for multiple years.
But other than that, I haven't really seen any Volair paddles being used or talked about.
Here I have their latest paddle, the Volair Shift. It features gen 4 technology so it's up to date — let's see how it stacks up to all the other paddles on the market.
Intro
My name is Pickle Li. I'm a 5.0 pickleball player and I've reviewed over 45 paddles on this channel. I created MyPickleList, which does community-driven paddle ratings, and there are currently over 900 ratings.
Caveats & Disclosures
Reminder: This is a first impressions review, not a full review.
I played with this for a few days, so I can't speak on long-term durability.
I'll be rating this paddle on my website MyPickleList at the end, so stay tuned for that.
If you do decide to get one, use code PICKLELI for 10% off. It is $190 before the code.
This paddle actually came from my Discord member bobpickle. I don't think he used it too much, so it should still be a good representative of the paddle.
Quick Specs Overview
The special thing about the Shift is that they have 3 channels in the foam core to allow for more flex — the sections highlighted on the design on the face.
The Shift is 14mm thick, which is less common among gen 4 paddles.
The Shift comes in the 3 regular shapes: elongated, hybrid, and widebody.
My paddle weighed 8.24 oz.

On-Court First Impressions
Pop
The Shift probably has average pop — enough to get the job done on a well-timed counter, but not something that will effortlessly bag someone.
Didn't really have any issues with pop-ups.
Control & Feel
The feel of the Shift is on the softer side. It falls under the more dense and soft gen 4 feel — maybe less dense feeling than others due to the 14mm thickness.
The first day I was mishitting the ball a bit more often than I usually do. It felt a bit dead on the top of the paddle. Could be from switching from an elongated, but normally I don't have to adjust too much.
On full swings like drives and returns especially, it feels a bit flimsy. Not sure if that's the best way to describe it.
This is not exactly how paddles work and I am generalizing here, but for a trampoline or something like that you would expect the ball to go into the core then rebound back — so your energy feels like it gets transferred into the ball.
With this on the full swings, it feels good initially as you strike the ball, but then feels like it maxes out or something and doesn't feel as clean of an energy transfer — so a bit flimsy in that sense.
Could be a 14mm thing, so maybe I would've preferred 16mm, but I did not feel this on the CRBN Trufoams or the Speedup Tides.
Performance-wise, I didn't see it affecting my shots too much, but just not the most ideal feel in my opinion.
I tried adding some weight a little higher than 3 and 9 to reduce some of the deadness — the day of it felt slightly better but not too different. The day after during some high-level games, I noticed it less, but maybe I was a little more dialed into the paddle in terms of hitting the sweet spot and focused more on the game.
Grit-wise it felt a bit above average in terms of grittiness, but it will probably wear down over time like most paddles.
I did not really have an issue with spin and getting the ball where I wanted. Pretty intuitive even in stock form.
Nice softer feel on most shots, especially softer shots like resets and dinks.
Power
I think the Volair Shift is a low-tier power paddle.
You'll need some effort on your serves, and you can generally swing through it without worrying about it going out.
Drives are solid but I would say it's more about setting up your next shot vs. winning the point off the drive itself.
Putaways don't hit crazy hard but hard enough.
Early Verdict
Now let me rate this on MyPickleList.
MPL is a website I built that does community-driven paddle ratings — a quick and easy way to see how good a paddle is without having to watch YouTube videos like this one. We currently have over 250 members and over 900 ratings, and it's only going to get better with more ratings, so please join!

Back to the review.
I think the Volair Shift is a solid paddle. It has a nice softer feel with pop relative to the lower-tier power paddles.
For me, in today's day and age, with control paddles in my opinion fading out, I would say this is the best Volair paddle out right now.
I'm going to give the Volair Shift an 8/10.
I have most of the early gen 4 paddles at 8/10's, and I would say this is a slight upgrade to them. I enjoyed the slightly softer feel in terms of control and it was pretty intuitive like I would expect.
I think the sweet spot is in the same general area with the others, maybe slightly smaller. The feel is not as nice on baseline shots, but it does improve after adding some weight and technically doesn't impact performance.
I think this paddle is for you if you like softer-feeling paddles and controllable power. It won't have as much power as most power paddles, but enough to hang.
If this came out earlier, when all the other original gen 4's were dropping, I think this would do well. Dropping in 2026 is too little too late in my opinion in terms of their sales — but in terms of the market, I guess it's better to have the option from Volair than them being stuck with gen 2 maybe gen 3 paddles.
Overall, I think it's a good paddle, pretty easy to play with even in stock form. Some weight could optimize it since it feels a bit dead at times. I played some good, high-level pickleball with it — just don't think it's moving the market with its performance.
